Safety first for Daggers chairman

 | | STAYING UP: Avoiding relegation is the aim for Dave Andrews this season |
by MIKE SIMMONDS
DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE chairman Dave Andrews has one thing on his mind this season, avoiding relegation from League One.
Daggers have been made one of the frontrunners for an instant return to League Two, after beating Rotherham United in the play-off final at Wembley last month.
But although this season will be the first time the Victoria Road side have ever been in the third tier of English football, Andrews is hopeful they can upset the bookies.
"John's (Still's) job this season is to stay up, it's as simple as that," he said.
"If we can finish fifth bottom, then I would be over the moon. We're going to give it a right go this year too and I don't see why we can't manage it."
After Daggers blew away Morecambe in the play-off semi-finals 7-2 on aggregate, the likes of Danny Green, Josh Scott and Romain Vincelot were thrust into the public eye.
"We've had a few enquiries, but nothing major," said Andrews.
"There was an enquiry for Josh Scott, but nothing came of it, while Danny has been about a bit before, so I think he is happy here.
"I'd like to think we can keep hold of our players right now, as we don't need to sell them."
Daggers have made two new signings since winning promotion, with Stuart Lewis and Gareth Gwillim agreeing terms.
With only Mark Nwokeji, Alex Bentley and Hakeem Araba released, Andrews believes the squad just needs some minor fine tuning.
"I said at the end of last season, we would only need around four new players," he said.
"When we lost five players at the end of the previous season, John was never perturbed and brought in new players from non-league who have fitted right in.
"He has brought in two more since winning promotion, and I think he was already talking to them before we went up. He is on holiday at the moment, but once he gets back we will have a meeting about his budget, and go from there."
