The announcement of the schools from which the under 16s volunteer cast for the opening event will be chosen coincides with six months to go until the Games, which is today.

Performers will be from schools in the six host boroughs. From Barking and Dagenham the schools are All Saints Catholic School, Hunters Hall Primary School, Grafton Junior School and Warren Junior School.

The schools are part of the Get Set network, a programme to incorporate the Olympic and Paralympic values into the curriculum.

Leader of the council, Cllr Liam Smith, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for all of the young people taking part, and will give them something to remember for the rest of their lives.

“They are already benefitting from a range of different experiences as a result of the Get Set Network and this really is the icing on the cake; personally I am very proud to have our young people represent Barking and Dagenham at such a momentous event.”

Over the coming weeks more than 900 children will be chosen to perform at the Olympic opening ceremony on July 27.

Schools from the six host boroughs will be auditioning in February for the Olympic Closing Ceremony.
