»My name is William Edmans but most people know me as Bill the Kit. My first involvement with Dagenham FC was in 1990 when Redbridge Forest FC ground-shared with the club. On the completion of the clubs’ merger in 1992, I was appointed kit manager.

Working for the club in Victoria Road has taken me to Ireland, Spain, Wembley (both old and new) and I’ve seen it experiencing promotion from Ryman League to now Football League Division One. I was also at all of the games played at Wembley for 1966 including England’s winning cup final.

To be nominated by the club for a Football League Award in the Unsung Hero category is indeed an honour which has come as a great surprise.

As well as acting as kit manager, I have been involved with the Referees’ Association since passing out as a Class 3 novice in 1951 and attaining Class 1 in 1959.

After serving on many leagues and competitions, I was appointed to referee the London Intermediate Cup Final 1969. I retired from senior football in 1972 and gave up the whistle in 1980.

On moving to Chingford, I joined West Essex Referees Society, holding the post of secretary from 1979 to 2000, and I was commended for 50 years service by the National Referees Association.
